The Teen Ambassador Program is a summer volunteering opportunity for high school students to lead gallery teaching and art-making experiences for children ages 5–12 and their families.
Teen Ambassadors build their self-confidence and public speaking skills through interacting with Museum visitors and mentorship with DMA staff members. All shifts led by Teen Ambassadors are given in pairs, emphasizing the value of teamwork, collaboration, and communication with their peers. Summer programs happen throughout the Museum, so Teen Ambassadors will also learn more about art history and the cultures represented in the DMA’s collection.
Update (March 9, 2021):
Thank you for your interest in the Teen Ambassador program at the Dallas Museum of Art. Due to ongoing concerns around COVID-19, we are canceling the program for 2021. Please check back in late July–August, when applications for the Museum’s Teen Advisory Council and Teen Podcast Project open. If you have any questions, please email us at teens@DMA.org.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can apply for the Teen Ambassador program?
DFW-based teens between the ages of 14 and 19 who have an interest in art, teaching, and developing leadership skills are encouraged to apply! You do not have to be an artist or have prior training in artmaking, teaching, or public speaking skills.
How do I apply?
Applications are available online starting in March of each calendar year. If you are unable to apply online or need additional support, contact us at teens@DMA.org or 214-922-1822.
You will be asked to provide contact information for yourself, your caregiver, and a personal reference. You will also provide answers to three short-answer questions. Answer the questions honestly and in your own voice. It helps us get a better sense of who you are and what you’re interested in!
When do I volunteer as a Teen Ambassador?
The Teen Ambassador program operates June through August of each year. Teen Ambassadors must complete at least 20 hours of service with the Museum throughout the summer, and can volunteer up to 40 hours if their schedule permits.
Teen Ambassadors that are new to the program must attend a two-day mandatory orientation at the beginning of June where they receive coaching in public speaking, customer service skills, and teaching strategies.
Once Teen Ambassadors complete their summer commitment, they are offered volunteering opportunities during the school year if their schedule permits.
I have other commitments during the summer. Can I still apply for the Teen Ambassador program?
Teen Ambassador-led activities are primarily scheduled between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on weekdays, with limited opportunities available during the weekend. Teen Ambassadors only sign up for the shifts they’re available for, so their time commitment is flexible around most summer activities.
