"Outside the Box"

Where can you find a mischievous moose, crayons on the picket line, a penguin for a BFF, or a book-eating boy? In the world of Oliver Jeffers—artist, illustrator, and picture-book maker. He was born in Australia, grew up in Northern Ireland, and now lives and works in Brooklyn. His paintings have been exhibited at museums and galleries in the U.S., London, and Berlin.

His hit collaboration with Drew Daywalt, The Day the Crayons Quit, rocketed to the top of the New York Times bestseller list. It tells the story of worn-out, weary crayons whose complaints inspire a young artist to color outside the lines and think outside the box. Jeffers’ latest book returns to the world of the Hueys, little creatures resembling eggs on legs, in It Wasn’t Me: The Hueys, Book 2. This time, the Hueys find themselves having trouble getting along.

Jeffers’ trademark don’t-take-yourself-too-seriously humor and whimsical illustrations capture what it feels like to be a kid, and can equally make you giggle with delight or feel an ache in your heart. When Jeffers was a child, his father taught him that the most important word is “why.” He creates worlds where it is safe—and often magical—to ask “why” over and over again.

Come early and use an Art-to-Go family tote bag themed on color. These bags are filled with games, hands-on activities, and conversation starters that can be used anywhere in the galleries.
