Late Night Talk: Global Style: Muslim Modest Fashion Today

This event has already passed

Kick off our Spring Fashion Series with a talk about the intersection of innovative design and modest dress. While modesty has long been a defining characteristic of Muslim dress codes, it has recently become a force in the mainstream fashion market, with both established designers and up-and-comers launching modest fashion lines that break down cultural barriers and propose a new understanding of feminism and female empowerment. In this brief talk, Jill D’Alessandro, Curator in Charge of Costume and Textile Arts at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, will touch on the past and present of modest fashion and a few designers who are creating innovative looks within the parameters of Muslim dress codes.

D'Alessandro curated and authored the catalogue for the exhibition Contemporary Muslim Fashions at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, among many other fashion exhibitions at the museum.

This talk is part of Late Nights at the Dallas Museum of Art and our Spring Fashion Series.
